Grammar and structure

Important lessons:

"Causative Verbs":

Have my hair cut
Have my car washed
Have my house decorated

Have something done

Have +object + V3

In Grammar, this is called "Causative"

I didn't wash my car myself, I had it washed at the carwash.

I didn't repair my watch myself, I had it repaired at the repair-shop.

Brides do not design their own wedding dresses, they have them designed by fashion designers.

I had a toothache, but I did not pull out my tooth. I had it pulled out at the dentist.

She did not test her eyes on her own. She had her eyes tested at the clinic.

Remember!
Have + object + V3

This is when a service is done for us.
I had my computer upgraded at the store.

I had my back massaged by a specialist masseuse in Antalya.
I had my smart phone repaired by the mobile store downtown.

I had my SIM card changed into 4.5 by the telephone company.

one last example:.
I could not type the long essay, so I had to have it typed by a typist.

2019-08-04 13:55:31 Using 'could have'

You use 'could have' to talk about possibilities in the past:

'I could have married someone else but I chose you.'

'We could have won the game if we had trained more.'

'I could have passed the exam if I had studied hard.'

'Could have' is always followed by the past participle:

'I could have written to him but I chose to call him instead.'

'She could have stayed up late but she decided to go to bed early.'

'He could have bought a jacket but he borrowed one from his friend.'

2019-08-03 21:13:07 When they are followed by clauses as well as or in addition to can only be followed by a verb in the -ing form (non-finite clauses):

You become less selfish as well as learning how to interact with other people.

Not: You become less selfish as well as you learn how to interact.…

If we worked in this shop, I think we would get good work experience in addition to practising our English.

In addition to doing an exam, applicants also had to do an interview.

Not: In addition to they did an exam …

2019-08-03 19:30:03 Beside
Beside is a preposition. It means ‘at the side of’ or ‘next to’. It is rather formal:

He would like to take a photograph of us. Would you come and sit beside me?

There was a small table beside the bed, on which there was a book.

Besides
Besides is a preposition or a linking adverb. It means ‘in addition to’ or ‘also’:

What other types of music do you like besides classical?

As a linking adverb, we usually put a comma before and after besides in writing:

I don’t think going for a walk is a good idea. It’s quite cold, and, besides, it’s getting late and we don’t want to be out in the dark.

2019-08-03 19:25:43 So choosing "In addition" instead of "as well as" for your essays and formal letters suits much better.
