Lesson 33 : How to say should / must / have to in Turkish:

In Turkish to express necessity, we can use the suffix meli / malı and the structure as follow:

Verb root + meli/malı +personal suffix

✿Verb Root is obtained by remeving -mek / -mak from the infinitive form.

✿If the verb root's last vowel is one of e/i/ö/ü, we will use suffix -meli

✿If the verb root's last vowel is one of a/ı/o/u, we will use suffix -malı

✿Finally we will add the personal suffix.

Let's see some examples:

✯Uyumak = Sleep
Uyu = Verb root

Akşamları erken uyu + malı + sın.
You should sleep early in the evenings.

✯Fırçalamak = Brush
Fırçala = Verb Root

Dişlerini her gün fırçala + malı + sın.
You should brush your teeth everyday.

✯Gitmek = Go
Git = Verb Root

Hastaneye git + meli + sin.
You should go to the hospital.

✯İçmek = Drink
İç = Verb Root

Bebekler süt iç + meli + ler.
The babies should drink milk
