Never shall the sons of Columbia be slaves, while the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
Never shall the sons of America bend, but united their rights and their freedom defend.

The Lafayette County Courthouse begun construction in 1847 and is the oldest remaining in use in Missouri. Over this time the columned portico has remained architecturally unchanged. In the Battle of Lexington, 1861 a cannonball struck the east column and remains embedded in the upper portion.

During the Civil War, soldiers spent comparatively little time in battle compared to time spent at encampments. Drilling, training, and awaiting orders occupy great sections of the average soldier's career.
This scene is a reminder of the scope and impact of the armies upon the American landscape. The vast camp is nestled amid idyllic countryside farms and railroads, all transformed to serve the war effort. The unsung artist of this sketch can be seen self-portrayed in the bottom right.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy built this monument in 1906. It was unveiled to a crowd of more than 5,000 people. Designed by M.H. Rice of Kansas City, it is carved of Vermont Barre granite.
The lion is inspired by the Lion of Lucerne in Switzerland, which commemorates the Swiss Guards massacred while protecting King Louis XVI. The lion, mortally wounded yet defiant, was deemed an appropriate symbol.
